CDT / MLD

Combined Decongestive Therapy (CDT) is the gold standard treatment for lymphedema, combining manual lymphatic drainage (MLD), compression bandaging/garments, therapeutic skin care, and remedial exercises in two phases: an initial intensive phase for volume reduction and a maintenance phase for long-term management.  This comprehensive approach, developed by Dr. Vodder, helps reduce swelling, improve mobility, and enhance quality of life by stimulating lymph flow, preventing fluid buildup, and preventing complications like cellulitis.

Components of Combined Decongestive Therapy (CDT)

CDT is a multifaceted treatment that typically includes these key components:

  • Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD):
A gentle, skin-stretching technique using rhythmic, circular, and spiral strokes to stimulate the lymphatic system and promote lymph flow. The Dr. Vodder Method is a specific, well-known MLD technique.
  • Compression Therapy:
In the initial phase, short-stretch compression bandages are applied to prevent fluid reaccumulation. In the maintenance phase, patients wear custom compression garments during the day.
  • Remedial Exercises:
Gentle, range-of-motion exercises are performed while wearing compression bandages or garments to help pump lymphatic fluid and strengthen the lymphatic system.
  • Therapeutic Skin Care:
Proper hygiene and skin care are crucial to prevent infections, such as cellulitis, which can occur in the affected area.
